EDCIS training or familiarisation is conducted by competent trainer in Company established familiarization procedure. This includes generic/specific training and backup in order to assure high familiarity and competency prior to taking charge of a navigational watch after any specific ship’s ECDIS installation.

It has been an industry standard commonly followed by most of companies to conduct type specific ECDIS training courses to ensure high competency of OOW. As familiarization guidance Nautical Institute published the Industry Recommendations for ECDIS Training (2012) with extended checklists in order to check OOW familiarization with onboard installed system.
